Debt Collection Scam Alert

I am seeing more people who receive some type of threat that they will be arrested if they don’t make an immediate payment on a debt. Often the person making this threat does not even identify who the debt is purportedly owed to. The threat of arrest can be an email, phone call or letter. The person making the threat may claim to be an attorney, an IRS agent or an officer of the court. Some have even claimed to be calling from an Indian Nation and threatening the individual with a trial in tribal court. All of these are scams.

If you receive one of these threatening phone calls, texts, emails or letters, try to get a contact number and then contact the local office of the FBI to report the scam. These are serious violations and the people behind these scams need to be caught.
